House Nehemiah received generous Mandela Day donations from community stakeholders, with members of the DA and Netcare providing food parcels for the vulnerable children cared for at the home.

According to the organisation’s website, House Nehemiah is a registered children’s home dedicated to providing care and protection for children who have experienced trauma and displacement.

Staff member Mfazwe David said the children in their care have been removed from their families by social workers, often due to circumstances involving severe neglect, physical, emotional or sexual abuse.

“Each child arrives with a story of hardship, but also with the hope of healing,” Mfazwe said.

The home currently provides holistic care for up to 30 children between the ages of three and 14. The organisation is also in the process of registering a second facility, which will expand its capacity to support 44 children between the ages of three and 18.

According to DA member Malyssa Hattingh, the donated parcels included snacks and treats for the children to enjoy. She added that the organisation relies largely on donations to remain operational.
