Man in ICU after assault at Krugersdorp restaurant
A Krugersdorp man remains in intensive care after he was allegedly pushed down a flight of stairs following an altercation outside a restaurant, with police investigating the incident.
The Roberts family says it is hoping for the recovery of Jacques Roberts, who remains in intensive care after he was allegedly pushed down a flight of stairs following an incident at the 6 on Heritage Square restaurant and pub in the Krugersdorp North area on Saturday, August 1.
According to the family’s spokesperson, Jacques’ sister, Lerine Roberts, what began as a normal night out quickly turned into a nightmare.
She told the Krugersdorp News that an altercation occurred inside the restaurant before continuing outside, where her brother was allegedly pushed down a flight of stairs.
West Rand Flying Squad spokesperson Karin du Plessis confirmed to the News at 15:22 on August 3 that a case of grievous bodily harm/ assault was opened following the incident at the restaurant.
Serious injuries
Jacques was rushed to hospital with multiple serious head, facial and bodily injuries.
According to Lerine, he sustained bleeding and bruising in the brain, a skull fracture, multiple facial fractures, a broken jaw and several other injuries in the fall.
“The brain injury and bleeding are extremely serious. However, the initial CT scan showed no dangerous displacement or compression of the brain at that stage, which was a reassuring finding,” she said.
Lerine confirmed that Jacques remains under close observation in the intensive care unit (ICU), where doctors are monitoring him for worsening bleeding, swelling, infection, neurological changes, vision complications and the possibility of surgery.
Road to recovery
Although Jacques is currently stable, awake and able to eat, he remains in considerable pain and faces a long and uncertain recovery.
“The doctors are continuing to monitor the swelling and bleeding in his brain closely. We are praying that the bleeding and swelling will decrease without the need for surgery, but further procedures may still be necessary depending on his progress,” Lernine said.
She added that his recovery will depend on the progress of his brain injury, the management of his skull and facial fractures, and whether surgery becomes necessary.
Family’s plea
The family said they remain devastated, shocked and deeply traumatised by what has happened.
“It is extremely painful to see someone we love lying in intensive care with injuries that may affect him for a long time. Our lives changed within seconds following what we believe was an act of violence. This could have been avoided if the situation had been calmly de-escalated and everyone involved had walked away.”
Lerine urged people to think carefully before reacting in anger, saying a few seconds of aggression can result in brain injuries, permanent disability, death, criminal proceedings and lifelong trauma for more than one family.
Support for Jacques
With Jacques facing an extensive recovery, the family has launched a BackaBuddy campaign to help cover his medical expenses.
According to Lerine, the family has already paid an initial hospital account of about R230 000, as Jacques does not have medical aid.
“We are deeply grateful for every donation, prayer, message and share. The support from the community has given our family hope during an incredibly difficult time,” she said.
Management issues statement
The News contacted the management of 6 on Heritage Square on Monday afternoon, who confirmed that an incident had occurred at the establishment. An official statement on social media said they were deeply shocked and saddened by the incident that occurred during the early hours of Saturday, August 1, outside the venue.
“Jacques Roberts sustained serious injuries after being pushed by another patron while exiting the venue. This was an isolated incident between two patrons,” the statement read.
Management said they have zero tolerance for violence or aggressive behaviour of any kind.
“Our team immediately assisted Jacques, contacted emergency services, and remained with him until paramedics arrived. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jacques and his family, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.”
The statement added that the matter is under police investigation and that management is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities. No arrests have been made yet at the time of publication.
