To help bridge the youth unemployment gap and pioneer eco-conscious mining solutions, Mogale Tailings Retreatment (MTR), in collaboration with public and private stakeholders such as the Mining Qualifications Authority and South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, held a career awareness expo in Kagiso on August 20.

The milestone event took place at Mandisa Shiceka School of Specialisation, with the aim of exposing learners to the rapidly expanding business and environmental sectors of gold tailings management, reprocessing and mine rehabilitation.

Unlocking circular economy potential

Historically viewed as simple mining waste, the responsible reprocessing of gold tailings has evolved into a vital pillar of the modern circular economy. Through advanced hydro-mining and grade-control planning, MTR is safely remining old waste dumps to economically extract remaining low-grade gold while helping to clean up the environment.

The event highlighted the critical intersection of technical engineering, environmental safety and data science needed to drive this green mining revolution.

Hands-on engagement for learners

According to co-ordinator Soya Modinga, the career awareness day featured a highly interactive programme, including expert-led exhibitions with direct engagement with environmental engineers, hydrologists, safety managers and drone operators.

Learners at the school were also given opportunities to explore various fields and determine which ones they were interested in.
