Braai Day is celebrated annually in South Africa on September 24, coinciding with Heritage Day to unite citizens around the shared tradition of cooking over an open fire. Pienaar describes his ideal braai as time spent with family and friends.

“My braai tong, Six Gun, braaibroodjies and a brandy are what I consider my essentials,” says Pienaar. He adds that his braai day is almost ceremonial, with guests coming together to prepare food by lighting the fire and socialising while waiting for the coals to get ready.
