Monument Gr 3 learner conquers two maths challenges

At just nine, this young maths whizz is already tackling complex equations and exploring concepts far beyond his grade level.

Grade 3 learner Matthew Delport (9) from Monument Primary School has secured top honours as the overall district winner in both the Gauteng Department of Education Mental Maths and Mathematics challenges.

Matthew participated in the cluster round on August 27 at Silverfields Primary School, before competing in the district round on September 8 at Krugersdorp Town School.

He recorded full marks in all tests at the awards ceremony at Westgold Primary School on October 12, where he received recognition for his participation and was named overall winner in both categories.

According to his mother, Tanya Delport, Matthew has a passion for mathematics and demonstrates advanced ability compared with his peers.

The nine-year-old practises daily and is exploring square roots, tetrations, exponentiation, pi and perfect numbers, solving complex equations mentally.
