We have had no water at our house for three weeks now.
Well that is not completely true. The first few days there was not a drop and after that the water comes and goes. It normally arrives after midnight and vanishes just after 5am. Mrs Pannall has kept us informed about progress via regular smses.
With no information from the relevant authorities this councillor’s assistance is of great value.
On the radio a few days ago I heard one of the leaders at Rand Water say, “It is a perfect storm”.
I disagree, it is a predictable storm – aging equipment, minimum maintenance, a lack of engineers, yes, a predictable storm.
In view of a growing population in Gauteng, higher demand for water and with very little expansion plans the future is beak. Last year we had no water in our street for two months. All our neighbours have tanks now.
They say that the next world war will not be fought over oil or religion but clean water resources. I wonder if that war will begin in our residential areas. Strange, now that I think about it, the water crisis cost the economy millions and nobody has lost their job.
I hate to be negative, but it will get worse until we know where the buck stops.
