Address underlying socio-economic ills

Raliphi Master Push Xolelizwe from Krugersdorp writes:

The newly formed Chief Mogale Community Forum deputy chairperson, G Boy Madondo has warned that violence against foreigners would not stop while the country’s numerous social-economic ills remained.

The Chief Mogale Community Forum was spearheaded by community members and comprises many community leaders striving for service delivery. Madondo said during Chief Mogale Community Forum general mass meeting although certain perceptions about foreigners fed into the violence, unemployment and poverty were also to blame.

“It is urgent that we address the underlying socioeconomic ills by making unemployment a national emergency and for the state to play decisive role in creating work, banning labour brokers, ensuring a living wage for all and urgently implementing a basic income grant,” Madondo said.

Over the past few weeks, there have been attacks on foreign shop owners in Durban and Joburg.

The Chief Mogale Community Forum’s working committee member, Pretty Shilaluke who is also an organiser warned that unless decisive action was taken, xenophobia would spread.

The Chief Mogale Community Forum warned that urgent measures should be put in place to ensure that the situation was contained. I told the meeting the country could suffer far-reaching economic implications as a result of the attacks.
