Mastectomy and the bra

Mastectomy bras have specialised features because they have been designed for a special need.

“In part four of my monthly blog, I would like to discuss something I believe is very important,” says our breast friend, Natie Spangenberg, owner of Comfit/ Pandora Bra Studio.

“In previous articles I could not emphasise enough how important a good-fitting bra is. Your breasts are as good as the bra that carries it. But even more so for the woman who has had a mastectomy.

“Whether only one breast was removed or both, if you are going to wear external breast prostheses, take note – the best fitting begins with the bra!

“If you have only one remaining breast the bra you choose must be a perfect fit, because then, fitting the external breast prosthesis most likely will result in a breast form that will match your own breast perfectly in size and shape. It makes sense if your bra does not fit properly, your breast form will not fit properly.

“Mastectomy bras have specialised features because they have been designed for a special need, among others, to carry external breast prostheses.

“These are the features to look for when choosing a mastectomy bra:

“Look for good separation between the cups as it should hold the breast form in place and prevent it from moving towards the cleavage area.

“It is very important that the style provides coverage appropriate for the surgical site. In other words, a bra that hugs the chest wall for a smooth secure fit, and elastic edging around the bra cup to hold the breast form securely.

“A mastectomy bra usually is cut a bit higher in front to prevent the bra from ‘opening up’ when leaning forward.

“The bra must have generous underarm support to cover the surgical site where lymph nodes might have been removed.

“And last, but not least, soft breathable pockets inside the bra cups to hold the breast prosthesis securely.

“A good fitting mastectomy bra will not only provide support and comfort but can restore confidence and improve self image.
