Money cannot buy time

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

“Make time”.

Has anyone ever asked you, “How are you”, and walked off before you could answer? It happens all the time. Most people, without thinking, ask this question but are not really interested in the answer. Don’t do it! The second evil is when we do answer, we give a standard answer.

“I am so busy.” Everybody is busy. Even the people who are not busy say they are busy because not being busy feels like a crime. The doorbell rings and we act busy. You are reading a novel and someone walks in and you feel guilty. Don’t!

The same Bible that says, “By the sweat of your brow you will earn your bread”, says, “Come ye apart and rest awhile.”

All of us live in 24-hour days, seven-day weeks, 365-day years.

Yes, we all have pressure but we can decide on our priorities. Family! If you are married, when last did you make time for a date night, movie, supper or a Wimpy coffee? If you have children, when last did you make time to talk to your son or daughter?

As a father that has buried my own baby, I know the importance of making time today. When last did you make time to be alone with God? An hour or two in a busy life to talk to God. When last did you make time just to be alone?

The key is, make time. Very few of us have open spaces in our days, but each one of us has the power to budget time for the important things in life.

At my age one of the most empowering words in my vocabulary is the word “no”.

No to clutter, no to busyness, no to extras.

It may be true that time is money, but it is even more true that money cannot buy time. Amen.
