To me, a sermon is more than the message a minister brings to his church on a Sunday.
Some of the best sermons I have heard have come from everyday experiences. One such sermon came as I sat ready to take off on a flight to Cape Town. The air-hostess got up to show us what we should do in the case of an emergency.
“In case of a loss of cabin pressure, a mask will drop down from the panel above your head. Place the mask on yourself before you assist others,” she said. It may seem like common sense but in an emergency many parents would try to help their children first.
Once you can breathe, you are better able to assist others.
The sermon for me that day was not, “Take care of number one.” It was, “Once I am sorted out, I must then assist the ones around me”.
We all face turbulent weather, storms and other crises. It is called life. These times may affect people around us. The Christian thing to do is accept God’s provision for us, and then, without missing a heartbeat, to look out for the needs of the people around us.
It is a simple Biblical principle. Let God help you first with your sin, then you should help others with their challenges.
PS. Look around you today; someone needs assistance.
