Robert Broom upgrade more of a headache

Local Jeromi Clusters and Robert Broom Drive residents write:

The anonymous letter in the 23 September edition of News regarding the ‘upgrading’ of Robert Broom Drive simply boggles the mind!

Firstly, only about one kilometre of the road is being upgraded. It is only being done for the benefit of the private school development and the new retail centre, and mostly funded by them.

Secondly, how on earth is it ‘world-class’? It is just a normal road construction, for goodness sake.

Thirdly, we, the residents of Jeromi Clusters and other residents in the area have been subjected to the most appalling and disgusting dust and noise pollution generated by the contractors who have had absolutely no regard for our health and peace. They ignored all requests to damp down the dust, noise and roller vibration, and we had to resort to contacting the responsible party to do something. Even now they only do something about the dust when we complain.

A resident who went to complain at the site office was simply told they could not help it if the wind blows. They can, however, wet down their construction site’s dirt roads when the wind blows.

We have tried to get our new Mayor to intervene, but without success, as the contractors seem to be a law unto themselves.

* The letter was forwarded to Mogale City’s Mayor for feedback. None has been forthcoming yet.
