Fix your heart first, then the world

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

I wonder if you have ever felt used. All of us have experienced that terrible feeling of being used or taken advantage of. But the other side of the coin is that all of us have used someone in the past.

I wonder if God ever feels used. I wonder if he thinks, “They only love me for the things they need from me”. And God knows if he does not answer our prayers in the way we ask, we may just stop believing in him. Heal, fix, take away, give are words that slip into our prayers.

Jesus prayed more than any of us. He continually faced persecution, rejection, betrayal and denial. In fact, at the end, he hung on a cross between heaven and earth. Discouraged and disappointed, he still remained positive.

His faith, his righteousness and his circumstances didn’t change. He was betrayed with a kiss, beaten with sticks, mocked and crucified. He even endured the mocking voice that shouted, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself”.

The lesson I learn from his life is simple – the power of God is not there to change my circumstances, but to change me.

Imagine if, with our terrible past in South Africa, 55 million of us could pray, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do”.

Don’t use God to fix your world, ask him to fix your heart. Amen.
