Smartphones versus driving

Theresa Ploos van Amstel from Krugersdorp writes:

For some reason some people think it is a smart thing to do, to be on their phones, texting or chatting, while driving. They must be thinking that they are super humans.

Jokes are even made between genders about doing more than one thing at a time.

To be on your phone, texting or chatting, while driving is no joke. People don’t think about how they put their own lives and those around them at risk.

Again people are naïve and think they can handle the phone and steering wheel at once, but they need both their hands on the steering wheel, by law. People ignoring this law are a risk for themselves and others. Most people need both their hands to be able to hold and text on their phone.

It is easy to spot someone on the phone while driving – the car is at times halfway on its way to the opposite side of the road, or they ignore (or just don’t see) the general road signs and just drive carelessly, getting away with it for that moment, until one day … they will be the cause of a serious accident. Think about how you would feel if you or someone close to you became a victim because of another person’s bad phone habits …

People know they should not do it, but still they are willing to take that chance. If people are not stopped by the law, what will it take to make them realise that it is not safe to be on their phones while driving? Someone’s life ..?

Is it really not possible for people to leave their phones and wait to answer/ make a call/ text, etc until they reach their destinations?

Leave the road at a safe place if it is urgent; stop and do whatever is needed – otherwise plan your phoning/ texting, etc before or after driving. That’s what I do and it works well for me. Otherwise, use the technology that comes with phones and cars these days.

There is no excuse for someone who tries to play “super human”. We all have the common sense of knowing what is right and wrong. The question is, are we willing to take responsibility for the wrong we do and the consequences that come with it? Driving and being on a phone at the same time does not work. It is a bad habit that needs to be broken.

Please, be smart with your phone and do what is right. The roads will be a safer place for all.
