I recently had the privilege of sitting in at Wits University listening to a school friend from Krugersdorp High School.
As David Block gave his heart and soul to the students in an applied mathematics session, I was overwhelmed. As a lecturer, his main task is twofold: to give his students the tools with which to solve problems, and to assist the students in developing the skills to solve problems or challenges.
My mind kept going back to my own work as a Pastor. It is my primary purpose not to give answers or even to solve problems. Each Sunday as I face hundreds of people in the pews, it is my task to give them the tools with which to navigate their life journey. Jesus set out many basic values, principles and priorities that are indisputable. If correctly applied, they are truly universal truths.
With these tools in hand, people, like the students in David’s class, will be prepared to solve some of life’s greatest challenges.
Jesus Christ, the greatest teacher that has ever lived, often responded to a question with a question.
Knowledge is useless unless it is applied correctly.
