No more doom and gloom please

Colleen Hollett writes:

I grew up in Krugersdorp and come home every few years to visit my family.

We’ve been in this town for over 40 years. I’ve been reading the newspaper over the last few weeks. With all due respect, I read it again today, and it left me feeling totally miserable.

This town has many great things going on. The majority of the 20 pages are filled with murders, robbery, doom and gloom.

People in South Africa are already struggling with main stream media being miserable. Could we please utilise the local paper for community development and uplifting stories?

It doesn’t mean we’re in denial or have our heads in the sand pretending bad things don’t happen; it means we focus on goodness in spite of the difficulties that everyone already knows is a reality world-wide.

This local newspaper has the potential to contribute to community development with positive reinforcement.

People respond to the information they’re provided with. Perhaps the community could be motivated and encouraged to submit uplifting stories of community contribution.

Let’s use the newspaper to show case the best of this town.

* Dear Colleen, thank you so much for your letter. I absolutely agree with you and from today will try my best to put together some uplifting and inspiring newspapers. After all, its the most wonderful time of the year and we should celebrate it! – Editor.
