I remember Winnie Mandela

Lydia Hill from Kenmare writes:

I hate politics; I just can’t take it any more.

Many years ago I received a call saying that Winnie Mandela wanted to buy a property that I was advertising.

I took it as a joke, but after three confirmations, she walked into my office with four bodyguards. To say the least, I had no idea what to expect as the news painted such a bad picture of her that I truly was not sure. (Why on Earth would she want to do business with a white woman?) True, all she wanted was to buy a house for one of her employees.

I never expected her to be so tall and felt very intimidated, especially with all the bodyguards staring at me as if little old me was going to attack her! She was stunning, very attractive and made me feel at ease instantly. Being an agent you are not scared to discuss your client’s needs and expectations and even personal things that do not get disclosed.

All I can say is that she was a believer in God, took care of the needy (that was her reason for being there in the first place) and very passionate.

This is where politics come into the picture. Nelson Mandela is pictured as the hero while Winnie is pictured as the villain. Shortly after he came into power, all religion was abandoned at schools. He would always start a speech with an I. He had no problem with divorcing her even though he knew very well that she was much younger than him. She dedicated herself to him, knowing very well that her life would be in danger, but it seems like he just did not care. It is a very different story being safely in jail with allies than outside with enemies.

What kind of man abandons his wife after so many years of dedication (even if she made some mistakes)? He married shortly again after, she never did. Makes you think.

Miss you, my friend.
