In the past six weeks, I have taken my son for driving lessons at one of the driving schools in Krugersdorp, after he successfully passed his learner driver’s licence.
Three days before he was due to go for the [driver’s licence] test, he was told by the driving school instructor that he should tell me about the R2 000 that he needs to bring on the day of the test.
I could not understand what the money was for and went to enquire. I was told that the R2 000 is for him to pass because without paying it there is no way that he will get the licence, even if he does pass.
On the day of the test, he did not make it and was told that he had failed to observe, which he denies as he states that there was no way he would not have observed and besides, the examiner was not even paying that much attention during the test and just told him to stop and that he had failed.
My take is that if he can’t drive, he should definitely not be issued with a driver’s licence, but on the same note, he should not be penalised for my failure to pay the required bribe.
My concern now is that I am not prepared to pay this R2 000, on top of all the costs for booking, including R500 to hire the driving school car.
All I am asking for is an honest outcome. I am very frustrated by this [situation].
