In the interest of giving credit where it is due, it really is high time that the law-abiding citizens of Krugersdorp acknowledge the exemplary effort being put in by our local police officers in order to redeem their once esteemed standing in the community, and reinstate the public’s trust in them.
The dreadful events of Monday, 22 January, which made our town an international news item for all the wrong reasons, were indeed a catalyst.
Our local police were plagued by allegations of corruption and dishonesty at worst, and apathy and poor interpersonal skills at best. Not so anymore. I have, of late, had very successful interaction with several of our local police officers.
I live in an area where there is a high incidence of drug dealing (near our notorious Sivewright Street). Not being the kind of person who chooses to be uninvolved and indifferent, I report the drug dealers and their clients regularly. The police officers with whom I have communicated have been motivated, interested, and keen to interact with community members.
In light of the increase in drug use among our youth, and the recent spate of tragic and unnecessary drug-related deaths, I strongly urge community members to get involved. Report drug dealers and their nefarious activities. Don’t be afraid to do so. In my experience, drug dealers are essentially cowards who prey on vulnerable individuals with addictive personality types, for financial gain.
People who choose to impart information about criminal activities to the local police, will be pleasantly surprised at the way in which our police respond.
There is a marked increase in police visibility in the area and morale appears to be considerably improved. We, the citizens of Krugersdorp, extend our gratitude to our local police officers and commend them for doing a sterling job under difficult circumstances.
