We can all do our bit

Sylvia Backström from Krugersdorp writes:

I would like to make a personal request to all citizens. I dislike having the rubbish diggers dig in my bin weekly, but let’s help them to help us to lessen our carbon footprint.

If we all separated our recyclables into separate bags/ boxes and put it out next to our bins on collection day, the diggers would

a) Not dig in our bins

b) Not leave a mess on our pavements

c) Be less of a danger hanging around in our streets obstructing traffic

d) Not hang around long enough to keep a watch on our comings and goings

e) Not be susceptible to diseases in our bins

f) Reduce landfill capacity requirements

g) Earn a living doing our dirty work

I have separate small bins for all my household recycling and this has reduced from two large full bins every week to only one and a quarter bin. Heavy glass can be taken to any number of recycle bins around town and techno waste (batteries, globes, phones, printers, PCs, etc) to President Square or Makro recycle bins.

The diggers will take paper/ cardboard, any plastic, tins, or light recyclables but take metal to any scrap shop. There is only one polystyrene recycler in Roodepoort, which makes it an effort, so if anyone out there can help in this regard, please do. Remember that all your medication packaging can be recycled, even aluminium blister packs – add it to your tins.

To our town council, please could you arrange a separate collection day for all garden refuse, which can be recycled into compost and sold.

My husband recycles all his restaurant waste and since January, has taken in over 4 000kg. It’s paid a few salaries.
