Animal welfare or animal rights?

Ron Thomson, CEO of The True Green Alliance, writes:

The article, Posts about starving lions allegedly fake, which featured on the News’ website on 30 December has reference.

Adult lions will consume 24kg of meat a week but they can go without food for 18 days – which is not uncommon in the wild.

In this case it is obvious that some animal rightist is trying to fabricate a disparaging lie because he or she disapproves of lions in captivity.

Animal rightists want to abolish all animal ‘uses’ by man. To do their job properly, journalists really need to understand the difference between animal rights and true animal welfare.

Animal rightists want to abolish animal uses, while animal welfare people accept that man does have the right to use animals for his own benefit, but they want to make sure that when he does so no ‘cruelty’ is involved with such ‘use’.

When journalists don’t know the difference between animal rights and animal welfare and quote animal rights propaganda in the press, verbatim, they are aiding and abetting the fraud and racketeering activities of the animal rightists.

Society should embrace animal welfare and reject animal rights.
