‘I also agree about rebate being ignored’

Bill from Krugersdorp writes:

The letter Pensioners’ request for increased rebate ignored which featured in the 30 August edition of the News, has reference.

I fully subscribe to the viewpoints expressed by the writer of that letter.

Furthermore, methinks that the situation probably amounts to an infringement of older persons’ constitutional rights in respect of equality, human dignity, property, housing and just administrative action.

Contrary to the legislation of the Older Persons Act of 2006, a situation presently also exists in terms of which different means tests exist at national and local government levels; for example, that applicable to qualification for an old age grant and that applicable to qualification for a rebate at a municipality.

The entire mechanism could be greatly simplified by simply allowing all persons in receipt of the old age grant a 100 per cent rebate on property tax.
