Only time will tell …

News intern Thato Monesi says weeks in isolation made him realise the beauty of having time on our hands.

More than two weeks have gone by since the president has announced a national lockdown.

The city streets are empty, all shops are complying with measures put together by the President. We are seeing the number of Covid-19 patients increasing daily.

In the midst of all Covid-19 reporting, South Africans still find ways to keep themselves entertained while indoors. On social media, people are displaying their impressive cooking and baking skills. The famous Ashley Raphala, known by his stage name DJ Shimza, started an online quarantine party, where individuals were kept entertained during the lockdown.

I woke up one morning to my mother staring weirdly into our lounge. When I asked her what was stealing her attention so much, she replied, “Have you ever noticed how the sun shines so bright in this room?”

That made me realise that yes, we are faced with the life-threatening virus; however, the lockdown has given so many people another perspective on life that they are starting to appreciate the small things that life has to offer.

We spend so many hours at the office on a normal day that we often neglect our loved ones and don’t get to experience the beauty of our space. It took my mother just one obligation-less day to realise how light entered the room – after living in the house for over 10 years.

The pandemic is putting pressure on us. We constantly hear of the number of deaths and how fast the virus is spreading. I urge you to take cognizance of what the government is saying and stay home. While doing that, don’t forget to show love to those around you and to find ways to show appreciation to one another, as we don’t get to do that often.

Stay safe, we will get through this.
