LETTER: What do we do after our faith runs out?

'If today you cannot go on, take a deep breath, look up and don’t give up' – local pastor.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

South Africans are amazing. Nothing ever gets us down. With humour we face almost anything. Imagine my reaction when I was asked, “What did we have before candles?” Clueless I shook my head.

“Electricity.”

Our country and our economy are facing its darkest days with all our load-shedding. But we will get through.

But what do we do after our faith runs out? Faith is powerful but it can run out, what then? From personal experience, after faith we sometimes just have to hold on. Don’t give up. Tomorrow is a new day, just get through today.

Illness, domestic trouble, financial chaos. Prayer dries up, faith fails you. It feels as if God is a million miles away and the Bible is a blank book. I have been there. Jesus probably knows the feeling. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me,” he cried.

But how did he get through it? He just hung in there. Not one day at a time, but one second at a time.

You will get through this. If today you cannot go on, take a deep breath, look up and don’t give up.

Haha, before candles we had electricity. After faith we have tenacity. Tomorrow is another day. Take a deep breath, look up and count your blessings.
