Will the Mayor of Mogale City please explain to residents of Krugersdorp and to the whole RSA why 1 000s of street lights have been switched on during daylight every day for the past year while there is a shortage of electricity, as a result of which everybody is inconvenienced?
This practice causes a waste of electricity, it shortens the life span of the globes and increases the cost to replace it. As a result of this practice, many street lights failed in Noordheuwel and other suburbs in December 2021.
It took Mogale City three months to replace them during which time residents were left in the dark.
According to my ward councillor the reason is to prevent cable theft.
This reason does not make sense as the lights are located in well-established and fully occupied residential suburbs and along busy highways.
On enquiry at the Electricity Department I was told that the reason is that the day/ night sensors have fused and that there is a shortage of them in the country.
I doubt this reason too.
