LETTER: Some things cannot be fixed

‘Forgiveness is a God thing; letting go is my choice. “Father, forgive them.'. – local pastor.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Some things can be fixed with an “I’m sorry”. If it is sincere, sorry can make a difference. Restitution can make things better. But no amount of saying sorry or restitution can change the past.

But even forgiveness is not that easy. Probably, in my mind, the most powerful story on forgiveness is linked to Jesus. Wrongly accused, false witnesses and a rigged trial led to his crucifixion. It is here where his forgiveness is so powerful.

He looks at his enemies and says, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do”. I have forgiven some people, some things, but I cannot imagine doing what Jesus did. Body full of pain, surrounded by hatred; to forgive is not human. It is an act of God. I can fake it but it is not possible to forgive at this level.

What do I do? I ask God to forgive those who have hurt me. My role is to let go. I cannot fix things, I cannot change yesterday, but I can let go.

If you have been hurt, let go. Don’t even try to change the past. But make a decision to stop the past from destroying tomorrow.

Forgiveness is a God thing; letting go is my choice. “Father, forgive them.”

P.S. If you let go, tomorrow could be a new day.
