LETTER: Absurd electricity bills … What nonsense is this?

Another resident, this time a pensioner, demands answers to how in the world they (the municipality) get to these absurd figures of usage in his home?

• Very concerned ratepayer of Mogale City writes:

I have in recent week’s noted in your newspaper the damning complaints of our Mogale City’s residents in regards to the absurd electricity billing accounts that they are being sent monthly which reflects astronomical amounts of so-called readings. Who do they appoint to take actual readings monthly?

• Also read: LETTER: Load-shedding and unchanged electricity bills. How?

I am a pensioner and have lived in my house for more than 35 years to date. Yes, Eskom has increased their tariffs more than inflation rate for reasons we are all aware of but not at the double inflationary figures the Mogale City states on their statement we receive monthly.

When you attempt to address this matter at the customer care kiosk, the person who you face is arrogant and not interested to entertain or even assist you. The answer you get is they have taken an average electricity usage of each household that they used etc this is how the accounts department determines your average usage over three or four months this how they justify your usage etc

What nonsense is this as they have appointed a meter reader that we the public pay for that should physically read each house in Krugersdorp and surrounding suburbs falling under Mogale City jurisdiction.

• Also read: LETTER: The more load-shedding there is the higher my account!

I send them a photograph each time the meter reader comes on an unknown date to all residents as they came there on an undetermined day, mind you, and not a day determined or agreed upon as that is not possible for them to arrange. I am a responsible pensioner so I forward a photograph of our electricity meter, which is outside my house on a wall, each month by the 7th which I forward to the Mogale Town Council’s billing department.

How in the world do they get to these absurd figures of usage in my home? We are only three adults living in our home. Every morning early I go to work, plus all these predetermined load-shedding, we also have continually for many hours each day and weekends for months now. This is blatant arrogance and sending final notices if you don’t pay them. I pay them every month. I am not the only household falling under this constituency with the same dispute.

The municipality has taken note of the complaint saying “It has been forwarded to colleagues at Public Safety. We will revert back as soon as response has been received” — Ed.
