LETTER: ‘Hope’

'To all of Mogale, I pray that this season of hope will bring you joy' – local pastor.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

After Covid-19 and all its struggles, Christmas can be a light at the end of the tunnel. Many people suffered physically and financially. Stories of loved ones who died, some only had the company of strangers to comfort them. Eskom and the suffering caused by load-shedding killing the economy.

State capture, corruption, crime and political turmoil could have seen the failure of our society.

But people still get up and go to work. People still laugh and hug. How is it possible in our hopeless situation that we do more, survive, and strangely thrive? It’s a little thing we cannot put into a test tube and we cannot express in words, it is something called “hope”.

For me, Christmas is a ray of light sandwiched between two dark realities, last year and next year.

The angels brought this important message to some shepherds 2000 years ago, “Good news of great joy”.

You may not want last year ever again and you may not see much change for next year, but one thing stops you from giving up, “hope”. My prayer for you for 2023 is that God’s gift, Jesus Christ, will be that one thing for you, “hope”.

To all of Mogale, I pray that this season of hope will bring you joy. Blessed Christmas to the whole world.
