Vision gymnasts take top honours
West Rand gymnasts take top honours at the 2013 High Performance National Gymnastics Championships.
Seventeen gymnasts from the Vision Gymnastic Club recently participated at the High Performance National Gymnastics Championships that were held in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal.
Four of these gymnasts, Gabriella Colandrea, Jordan Good, Hailey Good and Michael Makings hail from Krugersdorp and managed to get top honours for their performances.
Gabriella had a star performance, following a few training injuries during the weeks leading up to the event but her never-give-up attitude let her claim three gold medals and an all-around second place.
Sisters Jordan and Hailey made their family proud.
Jordan, a strong contender for the South African title in her age group, was diagnosed with encephalitis a few weeks before the qualifying rounds.
It was thought that she was not going to be ready to compete, but she showed a remarkable recovery and insisted on competing, despite her recent illness.
Jordan finished in a very respectable 12th all-around. Hailey brought back a bronze apparatus medal and finished in 10th place overall.
Michael competed in the senior Olympic section for men and was so consistent in his two days of competition that he became the 2013 national champion and with that the best male gymnast in the country.
Michael was also part of an international invitation team competition running simultaneously.
The field hosted gymnasts from America, Great Britain, Zimbabwe and of course South Africa.
Michael achieved an all-around third place in this event. He also raked in a total of eight medals.
To top it all Michael and coach Derick Scholtz were selected to represent South Africa at the 2013 World championships in Antwerp, Belgium in September 2013.
“We are very proud of these gymnasts. They train many hours – more than 24 hours per week – and results like these make it all worth it!” says head coach Derick.
In addition to these top performers, Visions Gymnastics’ other gymnasts at the National championships excelled by producing 41 medals and three new National champions in their age groups. For information on how to join gymnastics contact 011 475 7198 or visit www.visionsgymnastics.co.za.
