Touch rugby fever hits Krugersdorp once again

West Rand Touch Rugby League is in full swing.

West Rand Touch Rugby League is a well-known sporting event among local rugby players and every Wednesday night serves as a sporting highlight in Krugersdorp as touch rugby enthusiast gather to battle it out at Sterkfontein Heritage Lodge.

This year touchies season kicked off on 5 February and since has left no player or supporter disappointed.

“The league is currently in its second of ten weeks and at this stage players are competing in one of three divisions,” explains organizer Kobus Kruger.

“Players qualify to play in either the super league, first division or second division based on fitness, skills and age,” says Kobus.

The main objective for each team is to place among the top four teams in your division.

He explains the structure as follows:

Week 1: Grading week

Week 2-8: Teams play for a spot in the top four

Week 9: Semi-finals

Week 10: Finals

The 24 teams consisting of 240 players placed as follows on the log at the time of print: (The log changes weekly)

West Rand Touch Rugby League celebrates its tenth year and according to Kobus each year has been a great one. “The support is overwhelming and players take part in large numbers every time,” he says.

He owes the popularity of the event to the fun the versatile group of players enjoy.

“Young and old, sport and fitness enthusiasts, those who just want to get a good workout and those taking part for the social atmosphere – we have them all,” he says

The summer league final currently is booked for 9 April but is subject to change.
