Great preparation for Dusi
With the Dusi challenge in full swing, paddlers will be tapering down their extensive training programmes and building energy reserves.
The Two Day Klip River Race from Buksies Holiday Resort in Kibler Park provided excellent preparation for the Dusi.
The race included massive white-water rapids, tricky and challenging obstacles, weirs and pipes to shoot through.
The race covers 72km to the finish situated at the Vaal River junction in Three Rivers and it doubled as the SA K1 Championship Interprovincial canoeing event attracting solid competition from other provinces.
Liam Whitlow and Ryan Coutts, originally school friends from West Ridge High School, live in Krugersdorp and are members of the Florida Lake Canoe Club.
They mastered canoeing during the past year and spent the winter preparing for A-grade river status and successfully completed the Fish River Marathon together. The buddies, whose friendship is still intact despite broken boats and numerous swims, are well on track to succeed at their first Dusi, after finishing the arduous Klip River Race in six hours and 34 minutes over the two days with boat and friendship intact!
Numerous Gauteng paddlers grabbed the opportunity to race against the top world champion river, surf and marathon racer Hank McGregor in the seeding training race before the Dusi.
With the Dusi challenge in full swing, paddlers will be tapering down their extensive training programmes, building energy reserves and resting aching tired muscles while remaining supple with light regular exercise and paddling sessions.
