International sport stars visit Krugersdorp

Even though local motocrossing brothers are making it big overseas, they still miss their family, friends and biltong.

Already on a tight schedule, Krugersdorp’s talented motocrossing brothers Nicholas and Marcus Phelps stopped by the News’ office for a quick meet and greet.

The famous brothers who recently visited Krugersdorp for a brief time will soon be heading back to America for another round of motocrossing.

Marcus added another win to his name after he came second in the Freestone Final competition two weeks before coming back home.

Fifteen year-old Marcus and 17-year-old Nicholas are flying the South African flag high abroad and making name for themselves as motocrossing superstars.

The brothers were asked what they missed most of South Africa.

“Food! Especially the ribs and biltong, oh and our friends and family,” said Marcus and Nicholas.

Their grandfather, Len Phelps jokingly added, “and of course me,” as he chuckles.

They are currently based in Florida in Miami and only make brief visits to their homeland every three months to renew their visas.

Due to their busy training schedule and on-going competing the boys attend school through homeschooling with Cambridge.

“It is not just fun and games. They have to ensure they stay in tiptop shape,” recons their grandfather.

Besides being super fit, talented and fearless Marcus claims that if he had to have a superpower, he would want to be able teleport as his favourite childhood superhero is Batman.

Nicholas on the other hand would love it if he could fly and argued that Superman was way cooler than Batman.

Besides the stiff competition in motocross in the States, the brothers tell the News of the yummy and foreign delights they enjoy abroad.

A Mexican grill buffet restaurant, called Chipotle is Marcus’ favorite, while Nicholas claims the Steak’nShake is divine.

“They make the best milkshakes in the world,” he said with a guilty looking smile.

Not only are they on a strict training schedule but they also follow a healthy eating plan with the help of their full time trainer, “Every Sunday, after racing we get a cheat meal,” the brothers agree.

According to Marcus their favourite moments are spent racing while Nicholas enjoys being in the garden and in nature.
