Children invited to sign up for hockey

The emphasis is on fun and mass participation.

Caxton Khosa Sports Club is appealing to all children in the Krugersdorp area who would like to play hockey to sign up with its Mini and Junior Hockey sections.

The club has a proud 38-year history of offering the sport in the community, and has strong ties with other clubs in the Southern Gauteng Junior Hockey region.

Hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in South Africa. Most competitive hockey today is played on artificial surfaces, which ensures a fast, skilful game that is exciting to watch. The consistently good performance of our men’s and ladies’ national teams in the world arena has contributed to the popularity of the sport. A number of Proteas can trace back their hockey roots to Khosa, including current men’s squad member Clinton Panther.

Children from under five through to under 13 play mini hockey, and those from under 15 through to under 17 play junior hockey. The season runs from April to August.

The junior section enjoys a short practice on a weeknight, and matches take place on Friday evenings. Mini hockey practices take place every Saturday morning, with occasional round robins being played at a variety of venues.

The emphasis is on fun and mass participation, which allows those players who are not part of a school team to enjoy a long season while developing their game. Most of the coaches have played the sport at senior club or provincial level, and are required to adhere to strict technical guidelines. All coaches are encouraged to attain formal coaching and umpiring qualifications.

Registration of players will take place on three Saturdays (5, 12 and 19 March) at the club. The premises are located at the corner of Shannon Road and Frederick Cooper Drive in Kenmare.

The section has a website with a great deal of information. Visit www.minihockey.co.za or contact chairperson Deon du Toit on 082 888 2366 or email news@minihockey.co.za.
