Captain Charisma loses featherweight bout

A bitter-sweet moment for the West Rand as local boxer Thato Bonokoane loses.

Lerato Dlamini recently outboxed Kagiso’s Thato Captain Charisma Bonokoane over six rounds at the Soweto Showdown.

This was part of the South African junior welterweight title competition which Warren Joubert and Lungisa Jikani continued the following day.

In the fourth round, Captain Charisma came back strongly, but he was no match for Lerato – who beat him with a unanimous six points decision. Captain Charisma, a 57kg featherweight, has a fight history of five bouts, three being wins, one a draw and one lost.

“It was the toughest fight of my life but I have chalked it up as a good experience and I will do better,” he told the News.

The 25-year-old Kagiso resident is part of the Kagiso Boxing Club. He made the West Rand proud when his match was televised on SuperSport Select on the night of the fight.

Stablemate Cebo Ngema said, “Thato should have stayed behind the jab and kept going with straight punches. One thing to always remember is never to give your opponent time to think, because if you let him think he will out-think you. It was six rounds but we were hoping for a miracle which unfortunately didn’t happen.”

The match was promoted by Rainbow Boxing Promotion.
