Thato boxes his way to success
Boxer Thato shares his journey to the boxing ring.
Boxing is the last thing that comes to mind when one mentions charisma, but Captain Charisma has decided to change that.
He started calling himself Captain Charisma because of his charming personality, and the name stuck like gum, until it became more popular than his birth name.
Born Thato Bonokoane, he has always been a sports fanatic. He used to play soccer and had he not been bitten by the boxing bug, he would have liked to be a professional soccer player. Also an avid runner, he often runs to stay fit and maintains that boxing is his biggest passion.
The first time he got into a boxing ring was in 2009 and that is when he started taking his boxing career seriously. “I want to be a champ,” he told the News.
He says he wants to start by being the Gauteng boxing champion, become the South African boxing champion and then take his brand overseas. He also has dreams of winning the World Boxing Council (WBC) championship belt and proving that it is possible for the youth to be game changers in sports.
Training on a daily basis, Thato is determined to make something out of his career and become the West Rand’s first boxing champ. The 25 year old is already paying it forward by offering aspiring boxers advice with their careers.
One of his fights was recently televised on the Super Sport channel, but the result was a blow, because he lost the fight.

“I might have lost but I know that I will come back stronger and wiser. It was a learning curve and I know that I will be a champion,” the determined boxer said.
With five fights consisting of two knockouts, a points win, a draw and a loss under his belt, it is clear to see that Thato is aiming for the stars.
“My worst fear is facing my life without boxing. I know I won’t be able to box forever but life after boxing frightens me,” he concluded.
