The JMPD Protea netball team emerged as the champions in the inaugural Oupa Malefo Games.
The team beat five other teams in a tournament consisting of eight games played on Saturday, 16 July at the Kagiso Sports Complex.
The Oupa Malefo Games are set to become an annual netball and soccer tournament in Kagiso.
JMPD played a good game, because they were mature, experienced and prepared. Although the inexperienced Youngsters team also played a skillful game, they were at a disadvantage, because of their lack of height.
Both the Youngsters and the JMPD teams had a strong start and maintained the pace until the very last game, when the Youngsters proved to be no match for the older JMPD.
With lots of turnovers and accurate shooting, the Flames turned out to be one of the strongest teams, and gave JMPD a tough time in the introductory game. Their second match against each other ended in a draw, with a score of 18–18. Luckily, JMPD’s final game against the inexperienced Youngsters bagged them the title of winners. The JMPD Proteas thrashed the Youngsters, with a huge score of 38–12.
