Khosa Cubs emerge victorious
The Cubs showed grit and walked away as winners.
Khosa Western Cubs Junior Rugby U/13 side participated in the recent VKB Rugby Tournament held in Frankfort in the Free State.
The purpose of the tournament, initiated in 2001, is to give players from all backgrounds the opportunity to compete at provincial level.
It has been dominated by North West Province with them being victors for 14 years.
This year’s tournament kicked off with the Cubs taking on the North West team. Khosa Cubs proved to be too strong for the reigning champions, defeating them 47–0.
The tournament was set for exciting rugby, and everybody wanted to play against the Cubs – considered the underdogs at the start of the tournament.
Day two kicked off with the Cubs thrashing Free State 41–5, and PTA Private Schools’ Rooikatte 48–0, clearly setting the scene for the finals against a formidable Titans side.
According to Cubs Chairperson John Smith he was elated to have two Gauteng sides competing in the final.
The Cubs showed grit when they faced Titans in the final and triumphed 22–10.
To crown the tournament, nine of the Cubs’ players were selected as part of the dream team selected by independent selectors throughout the tournament.
The following boys were selected:

• Ronan Hermann: Scrumhalf (Laerskool Muldersdrif)
• Joshua Smith: Flyhalf (Laerskool Muldersdrif)
• Bertie Venter: Flank (Laerskool Kenmare)
• Toitjie du Toit: Hooker (Laerskool Muldersdrif)
• Collin de Lange: Centre (Laerskool Fochville)
• Celvin de Lange: Fullback (Laerskool Fochville)
• Jason van Wyngaardt: Wing (Laerskool Dr Havinga)
• Dihan Oliver: Prop (Laerskool Muldersdrif)
The success of this team can be attributed to a lot of talented youngsters being coached by a team of highly qualified coaches:

The tournament took a lot of organisation and coordination. Khosa Western Cubs is grateful towards Janet van der Merwe who worked tirelessly to make sure everything ran smoothly.
