Local veteran wins provincial angling champs
Without using any special bait, Vossie triumphed over all the other anglers and was crowned the veteran carp champion of the day.
A proud resident of Krugersdorp recently beat more than 110 other anglers with his excellent fishing skills and won the ultimate first place in the Light Tackle Boat (LTB) angling championships held at the Vaal Dam in Sasolburg.

Vossie Voster was named the best angler of the championships in the veterans’ category, when he caught the biggest carp while on board his trusty motorboat.
His team also won the gold fishing medal for the large amount of fish they caught on 7 and 8 October. A team consists of two anglers who are required to catch as many kilograms of fish on a standard 4kg fishing line as they possibly can. Without using any special bait, Vossie triumphed over all the other anglers and was crowned the veteran carp champion of the day.

Competitors usually use a mieliebom – a well-known South African freshwater bait that consists of flour and corn – to catch the fish. Some however, use other ‘special’ types of bait which they believe are much better
“I’m not a guy who would use any foreign type of bait to catch fish,” Vossie said. “I think it becomes too complicated to remember the tricks behind different baits, and then you struggle to catch fish.”
Vossie said his fishing habits and beliefs began as a hobby, but soon turned into a passion as he spent more and more time throwing his line into the water.
Although he won the veterans’ category, Vossie said it was a difficult two days of fishing because the carp were spawning. Competitors only caught about 4 or 5 tons of fish during the two days because the fish didn’t want to bite.
