New cycling club hosts second club race

This club was founded only at the beginning of this year and a race like this will be held regularly.

On Sunday, 11 June the Cradle Cycling Club hosted their second BMX Club Race at the X-Stream Bike and Adventure Park. The more than 40 cyclists that participated ranged from beginners to elites.

This club was founded only at the beginning of this year and a race like this will be held every month or two for cyclists from as young as four years old.

According to Chris van der Merwe, chairperson of the cycling club and manager of the park, this event was held for all racers to prepare for the provincial race that will be held on Sunday, 25 June, also at the X-stream Bike and Adventure Park.

“It’s an essential race day for the club, a call for people to join and the opportunity for cyclists from other clubs to enjoy the day with us,” he said.

These races are also aimed at identifying new talent and to help those young cyclists grow.

“We put children as young as two or three years old on a bicycle, and we teach them to paddle,” he said.

This event also saw numerous SA cyclists, including Alex Whitehead, attending.
