“Terror” Mathebula wins award at provincial sports awards

'Terror' was the first black boxing world champion in the flyweight division in 1980.

Silverstar Casino once again hosted the sixth Gauteng Sport Awards and the Who’s Who in all spheres of sports, showbiz and politics where there, dressed to the nines.

The gala event, which is similar to the international Laurus Sports Awards, was one for the books. It was a joint occasion hosted by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Art, Culture and Recreation, the Rand West City Local Municipality and Mogale City. It was also broadcast on SABC 1, and hosted by Thomas Mlambo and Vaylen Kirtley, SABC Sports’ ace sports presenters,

Tips, the sports comedian, had the crowd laughing their socks off as he showcased his brand of humour.

Faith Mazibuko, MEC of Sports, Art Culture and Recreation in Gauteng and Mzi Khumalo, Executive Mayor of the Rand West City Local Municipality, were among the guests of honour who graced the attendees with their presence. Lucas Radebe, former Bafana Bafana captain, Kaizer Chiefs and Leeds United legend, also attended the event.

Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club won the team of the Year Award, while Pitso Mosimane scooped up Coach of the Year, and Hlompo Kekana won Sportsman of the year.

Boxing legend Peter ‘Terror’ Mathebula was awarded the Life-time Achievement Award, putting the West Rand on the map in these awards. Peter received a standing ovation as he ascended the podium. He is the first black boxing World Champ in the flyweight division since 1980. He is from Mohlakeng and the locals hosted a tournament in his honour recently.

“We, the family of ‘Terror’ are really happy that he has been recognised and honoured by both municipalities and the province as a sports hero,”said Boyce Mathebula, ‘Terror’s’ son, who is also a boxing fanatic.
