If you want a soft serve, go to an ice cream parlour – tennis club

On Saturday, 14 October roughly 60 members of the Noordheuwel Tennis Club served their best balls and put on their finest shoes when they held their Club Final Championships combined with their year-end function at their clubhouse in Noordheuwel.

If you are a fan of ice cream, you best not go to the Noordheuwel Tennis Club – they don’t do soft serves.

Recently the local tennis club had a big, green, fuzzy ball of a time when they brought their annual year-end function back to life.On Saturday, 14 October roughly 60 members of the Noordheuwel Tennis Club served their best balls and put on their finest shoes when they held their Club Final Championships combined with their year-end function at their clubhouse in Noordheuwel.

According to William Nel, a club representative and coordinator of the day, the club has had a few dry years regarding their year-end functions.”Over the past few years these functions have sort of died off. But this year we’re back with a bang – and not only on the court, but at the function as well. We thought it best to award the members for their hard work and dedication throughout the year,” he explained.

During this event members and coaches were not only awarded for their commitment and presence during the year but also for other, less serious traits. Awards such as ‘Best-faked injury’ as well as ‘Club banana’ were also handed out to those worthy of the titles.William went on to explain that it’s important for them to remain on the radar as tennis on the West Rand is slowly but surely running dry.

“There are so many courts in the area that have gone to waste for no reason, and it’s sad to see it happen. This is why we want to attract the youth with their families – we want to build on our tennis community. We currently have 10 courts on the premises with so much potential,” he said.

This is why the club is going the extra mile to ensure a future for tennis in the West Rand area. They aim to change the mindset of the community, and encourage family tennis. The winners of the club championships are as follows:

Senior men: Wilco Cilliers

Senior women: Micaela Maritz

Junior men: Dohan Cilliers

Junior women: Alexia Maritz

After the awards the event was marked by a delicious meal, good company and laughter.
