Canoeing buddies prep for Dusi
Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted the seeding and training race which consisted of 30km of paddling.
Krugersdorp residents who attend the North West University in Potchefstroom are in training to succeed at the challenging FNB Dusi River Canoe Marathon event in February, despite limited access to rivers for training.
Ronald Botha, still a first-year novice, and Henk Louw are training to gain some valuable paddling knowledge.
The pair recently finished the 30km training race on the Klip River (from Daleside to Meyerton), in a time of three hours 25 minutes and are confident they will be ready for the FNB Dusi.
Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted the seeding and training race which consisted of 30km of paddling with two 2km portages, during which the paddlers have to run while carrying their boats from one point to the next, on Sunday 10 December.
With more than 100 entries in the race, it was the best-supported local river race in months, as paddlers gear up towards the FNB Dusi which takes place from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. The Dusi is known as the world’s toughest endurance canoeing event.
With heavy storms and high rainfall during the past couple of weeks, the water level on the river was superbly wild, fast and furious, and thoroughly enjoyed by the experienced paddlers.
