Dusi training peaks with high water levels
The Joburg Country Club hosted a two-day 60km Klip River training race to provide an opportunity for seeding for the Dusi race.
Local resident Dekker Erasmus has enjoyed both running and canoeing for a number of years and this year has partnered up with 18-year-old Tristan Trican to provide him with the opportunity to experience the highly technical, tough Dusi River Marathon endurance event for the first time.
Trican has trained extremely hard for months – running, portaging with his canoe, and paddling, and is ready for the ultimate challenge.
Johannesburg Country Club recently hosted a two-day 60km Klip River training race to provide an opportunity for seeding and start batching for the Dusi race, which takes place from 15–17 February, from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, and is the world’s toughest canoe endurance event.
The training race took place on 27 and 28 January, from Daleside on the Klip River, towards the Vaal junction in Three Rivers, covering a distance of some 32km each day and including a few sections where paddlers had to take their canoes out of the water and run a short distance, i.e. portage, before relaunching them into the river.
The river level was high this past weekend as a result of the frequent rain storms throughout the South/ East and West of Gauteng, from where the Klip River is fed.
The pair did very well in their first race together, finishing the two-day event in four hours, 46 minutes, as the 15th Double to finish, and are looking forward to the tough challenge of the Dusi event.
