Katja’s judokas shine at championships

Four teams qualified for national selection

Judokas from the KJK Judo Club achieved excellent results at the recent South African Open Judo Championships.

The championships were held in Port Elizabeth over a period of six days, with the judokas being given the opportunity to showcase their skills in various categories, including kata as well as individual and team kumite (fighting).

Thirty-three judokas qualified for participation and Sensei Katja Bruwer said, “I am very proud of all of my judokas – they performed very well. Judokas from 10 districts, plus Namibia, took part in the championships, and, out of a possible nine first places, we took six. A total of 51 medals were presented to the teams, with our club winning 18 of them. In the SA Kata competition, we also won 18 medals, with the senior judokas dominating the Group 5 and 6 categories.”

She added that four teams have also qualified for selection to represent South Africa during the upcoming African championships, which will be hosted in South Africa next year.

The following medals were won:

— Individual fighting:

• Christelle Goliath, Shawwal Bagaria, Dewald Schultz, Moagi Molefe, Hanu Boshoff, Hendrik Alberts and Oabile Molefe won gold medals.

• Willem Truter, Harm Venter, Shalyn van den Heever, Rikus Hall, Ruhan Terblanche and Tyla Stacey-Hale won silver medals.

• Gerhard Schultz, Raydon Diab, Carlin Anthoney, Keagan Diab, Nico Pieterse and Eugene Delport won bronze medals.

— Team kata:

• Louis and Willem Truter, Louw Schultz and Willem Truter, Louw and Gerhard Schultz, Raydon Diab and Dewald Schultz, Raydon and Garren Diab, Ruhan Terblanche and Nico Pieterse and Shawwal Bagaria and Keagan Diab won gold medals.

• Louis and Willem Truter, Louw Schultz and Willem Truter, Gerhard Schultz and Ferdinand van den Heever, Reece-Hunter Erasmus and Ferdinand van den Heever, Ferdinand van den Heever and Ruan Delport, Anthoney Mommsen and Christiaan Theron and Oabile Molefe and Eduan Erasmus won silver medals.

• Tyla and Aiden Stacey-Hale and Shawwal Bagaria and Moagi Molefe won bronze medals.

At the team events, the West Rand Senior Men’s Groups 5 and 6, the West Rand Girls’ Groups 3 and 4, West Rand Boys’ Group 4 and West Rand Girls’ Group 1 won gold medals, while the West Rand Girls’ Group 2 won a silver medal.

Katja concluded by saying, “During a prestige dinner at the SA Championships, Harm Venter was also awarded a cheque for R5 000 from Judo SA, for his bronze medal won at the African Junior Championships.
