Local paddlers set their minds on the big one

Mike Stafford partnered with new paddler, Charles Carr, to enjoy his first river race.

Paddlers in Gauteng are getting organised and fit for the serious part of the canoeing race year.

The season, which begins in April, covers winter training, but with the warmer spring weather, paddlers are taking their fitness more seriously as they prepare for the upcoming A Grade Fish River race in October, to be followed by the Dusi in February. They’re progressing from 20km races, building up to 80km, and carrying on until the 120km endurance event!

The Watuni Canoe Club, based in Vanderbijlpark at the North West University campus, hosted the 20km river race from the Makery in Henley on Klip, through Meyerton and some awesome white water rapids, with a good winter water level in Gauteng, to finish at the Danie Maclean Park, downriver.

Mike Stafford from Ruimsig partnered with new paddler, Charles Carr, to enjoy his first river race. They are both members of the Florida Lake Canoe Club in Roodepoort. The race took place on Saturday 18 August, which was a rather gloomy and overcast day, but that didn’t deter the paddlers who tackled the river with gusto and enthusiasm.

The pair finished their first race together in a time of two hours and six minutes and are looking forward to their next adventure.
