French rugby’s Scott Spedding visits Monument Primary
Winding down his long career in rugby, Scott Spedding made a visit to his country of birth, stopping by his alma mater and inspiring the children.
Rugby player and former Monument Primary and Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord schoolboy, Scott Spedding, who plays for France, recently visited his country of birth and, as part of one of his final stops in South Africa, visited his old school.
During his six years at Monument Primary, Scott played many rugby games for the school and, in a memorable bout against Noordskool scored nine tries, securing a 45–0 win for his team. From there, he went on to captain his teams at St John’s College and then play for the Sharks after school, before moving to France and playing for multiple teams, including the French Rugby Word Cup team. He made his test debut in France against Fiji on 8 November, 2014, and played his last test for France in a match against Japan on 25 November, 2017.

In March of this year, Scott finally stepped down from professional rugby.
During Monument Primary’s morning assembly on Monday, 28 October, Scott told the children to never give up and always pursue their dreams.
“I sat right there as a little boy, and all I wanted to do was be a rugby player. I didn’t know how I was going to get there, but nothing could stop me. Never stop trying, no matter what you do. At some stage, the door will open and you’ll break through.”
Scott also explained that at one point in school he was told that rugby just wasn’t working out for him and he should consider another career. Today he’s one of the best-known players in international rugby.
