Kagiso cyclists finish second in 947 challenge
A Kagiso cycling team placed second in the 947 Ride Joburg Challenge in November.
The 947 Ride Joburg is a gruelling 94,7 kilometre cycling challenge spanning Fourways, Sandton and Johannesburg CBD.
Four Kagiso cyclists placed an impressive second among 516 groups and 15 797 competitors.
Aobakwe Seimelo, Mxolisi Nobhala, Seganeno Semakaleng and Lekwape Koketso get up early each morning to hit the road by 4.30am on hot days.
From there they set out to do a minimum of 100 kilometres in and around the West Rand.
“Sometimes we just do a warm-up of 75 kilometres,” Aobakwe said jestingly.
The main problem, they say, are motorists on the road who don’t always give them space, and sometimes cause very dangerous situations for them. Still, they persevere, and it certainly paid off for them on 17 November.
Aobakwe told how they were slightly over-prepared for this one, and he even did a second lap of the 947 course after finishing his required lap.
Aobakwe placed 1 314th overall out of 15 797 contestants in 2:51:48 with an average speed of 33,18km/h. Seganeno placed 1 325th in 2:51:59 with an average speed of 33,14km/h. Lekwape place 7 700th in 4:03:25 with an average speed of 23,42km/h.
The group is still waiting for Mxolisi’s results.
