Give your old takkies to new runners

The Sterkfontein parkrunner are calling on all runners to donate their old takkies to a good cause.

The Sterkfontein parkrun is a free, fun 5km run that is hosted at the Sterkfontein Heritage Lodge in Rant-en-Dal on Saturday mornings at 8am. It is not only a place where you can get fit and blow off some steam, those involved also give back to the community.

All you have to do is register before your first run; registration needs to be done only once. Because it is a timed event you have to remember to bring your printed barcode with you, otherwise you won’t get your time.

The Sterkfontein parkrunners recently started a shoe drive for those who would like to start running or walking, but cannot afford their own running shoes. They need your help to help others.

“This is an initiative that is very close to our hearts. Walking and running are what parkrun is all about, and nobody should be excluded,” the group said on their Facebook page.

They called on all their current and new runners to bring their old takkies with them the next time they join the run, and said that if shoes are wearable they are donatable.

Some of the shoes will also be donated to other parkruns in the area where people are not as fortunate.

Other venues for parkruns on the West Rand include Ruimsig, Randfontein, Roodepoort, Golden Harvest, Lanseria, Alberts Farm, Mofolo, Noble Village, Bosmont Stadium and Westbury.

Visit their website at www.parkrun.co.za if you have any more questions.
