West Rand Marathon around the corner
The first-ever West Rand Marathon is around the corner and entries are open.
There is good news for the runners of the West Rand – a new race has been launched.
The West Rand Marathon is around the corner and you can enter now.
The official launch of the first annual West Rand Marathon was hosted at Silverstar’s platinum ballroom on 6 February.
Among the attendees was the West Rand District Municipality Executive Mayor, councillor Denis Sello Thabe, who told the crowd that they wish for someone from the West Rand to win the first race, therefore as many people as possible from the West Rand must enter.
Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) President and the chairperson of the Road Commission of Athletics South Africa (ASA), James Moloi explained they were planning to add a 21 kilometre race in 2021 and a 42 kilometre race in 2022.
“It will help expose our athletes to other competitions, and it comes just as we are training for the Tokyo games,” James said.
The South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SACOC) President, Barry Hendricks said they were excited about this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“Athletics is one of the sport codes that bring in medals, and we appreciate that government is supporting athletics,” Barry said.
The guests also listened to a message of support from the West Rand Marathon Ambassador, Hezekiel Sepeng and a speech from the MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mbali Hlope.
The race will take place on 22 March at the Greenhills Stadium in Randfontein. There will be a 10km race that will start at 7.30am, and a 5km race that will start at 7.40am.
There will be prizes up for grabs in the juniors, veterans, masters and grand masters categories, and the winner of the 10km race will walk away with a R20 000 cash prize. Second place will win R10 000 and third place wins R5 000.
There are also cash prizes for the 5km race: R4 000 for the winners, R2 000 for second place, R1 000 for third place and R750 for fourth place.
