Khosa prepares for upcoming hockey season

Although the teams’ first round robin will be held in May, they're already training hard for their upcoming matches.

Khosa Mini and Junior Hockey players are already hard at work building their teams and getting in their first few sets of practice.

Pretraining started in the latter half of February for the mini groups from U/5s to U/11s and the juniors, preparing players for what’s to come when the actual training kicks off.

The teams’ first round robin will be held on 16 May at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg, but the players need to get into tip-top playing shape before then.

“All of them are youngsters so they are in pretty good shape, but not hockey-playing shape,” chairperson Deon du Toit said. “We will start shaping them from here on.” They will also play league matches on Friday nights at various astro clubs in the greater Johannesburg area.

Registrations are still open, and they are in need of players in all age groups, boys and girls.

“We appeal to all U/14 and U/15 boys and girls to join the junior section of the club,” Deon specified. “With the junior teams things get serious and the competitions get tough. It’s a lot more serious at juniors; the fun aspect is enjoyed at the Mini sections.”

Khosa Mini and Junior Hockey teams are U/5 and U/7 mixed boys and girls; and U/9, U/11, U/12, the U/13 and U/14 joint teams; the U/15 and U/16 joint teams for boys; and the U/15 and U/16 joint teams for girls.

Khosa Hockey helps young players far exceed their capabilities in schools, as they get the opportunity for additional practice, and exceptional training standards from professional couches. Registrations are open every Saturday morning at the Khosa Club.
