Khosa Road Runners picking up the pace
The Khosa Road Runners club has slowly been picking up the pace, and recently welcomed old and new members to regular runs multiple times a week.
The country seems stuck in this odd limbo between lockdown restriction stages, making it tough to return to a normal way of living.
Fitness establishments are back in operation, but there are a lot of limitations. Add to that the general sense of caution, and it’s difficult to get the community’s fitness habits back to where they were this time around.
When it comes to determined runners, it’s kind of a mixed bag. Half of them seem happy to return to the streets late in the afternoons, while others are holding out a while longer to see if Covid-19 passes completely.
The Khosa Road Runners club has slowly been picking up the pace, and recently welcomed old and new members to regular runs multiple times a week. There are still quite a few members who have chosen to wait it out, but the club can finally operate again at a fairly sustainable membership level.
The group adheres to all the government regulations, but as Stella Parker noted, there wasn’t much adapting to be done. “Generally, you tend to run in pairs, and because everyone has a different running pace, we automatically distance ourselves.”
Currently, the club hosts runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from about 5.30pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays, with 4km and 8km routes for different fitness levels.
“We encourage people to start joining soon. Some people started now and their fitness has really improved,” Stella explained. “Here you go from couch potato to Comrades runner,” laughed member Mark van der Merwe.
The club will kick off its business year soon and is currently welcoming new runners.
